4.2 Members agreed that the Chair should write to the Welsh Government seeking further clarification of the government’s response to the Report recommendations and an explanation of why they have changed their policy on erecting screens around crashes, on the A55, to deter motorists from looking at accidents.

3.1 The Committee took evidence from James Price, Director General, Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science, Sheena Hague, Deputy Director, Network Management, and Andy Falleyn, Deputy Director, Infrastructure Delivery, Welsh Government on its inquiry into value for money of Motorway and Trunk Road investment.

 

3.2 James Price agreed to send the following information to Committee:

·       explore the suggestion that there are inaccuracies in information provided on the A55 on the Traffic Wales website;

·       provide a note on numbers of road works in NMWTRA, including overnight works and the time involved in scheme delivery;

·       provide a note on the number of complaints around road works, including the percentage of road works which are subject to complaints, and introduce more formal and regular reporting;

·       confirm when preparation of the new StreetWorks Strategy began and the reasons why it has taken four years to develop; and

·       investigate the recent difficulties resulting from road works in North East Wales and how this relates to cross border co-operation with English Highway Authorities, including the Highways Agency / Highways England.

6.2     The Committee considered the evidence received.

 

6.3     The Committee agreed to:

·         request figures on staffing levels and information on around traffic management and resilience arrangements from Trunk Road Agents;

·         seek further information from the Welsh Government on major trunk road schemes currently under construction, its approach to prioritisation of future schemes, and greater detail on Trunk Road Agent expenditure, work programmes and future budgets;

·         write to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) to request information on managing incidents and the use of screens; and

·         write to Highways England seeking information on its approach to maintaining and improving the English Strategic Road Network, including the expected benefits of the new structure and approach, and how this will provide greater certainty in funding.

 

6.4     Research Service agreed to provide clarification on Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridors in Wales and the UK and information on Highways England.
