In late January 2025, there were widespread media reports of a financial crisis at the British Council.

On 29 January 2025 , the Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee wrote to the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs seeking assurances that the British Council is supported towards a financially sustainable future.
