Appointment of the Counsel General

As the Chief Legal Adviser to the Welsh Government, the Counsel General is not a Welsh Minister, but is a member of the Welsh Government. The Counsel General does not have to be a Member of the Senedd.

 

The Senedd must agree the First Minister’s recommendation to Her Majesty of a person for appointment as Counsel General (Standing Order 9.1). The procedure for appointing a Counsel General are explained in detail in Section F of the Guide to early Plenary business after the May 2021 election.
