Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 - Post-Legislative Scrutiny

The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 (the Act) came into force in September 2014. The term ‘active travel’ means walking and cycling and the Act focuses on walking and cycling for transport rather than leisure. Section 2(7) of the Act defines an “active travel journey” as “a journey made to or from a workplace or educational establishment or in order to access health, leisure or other services or facilities”.

The Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee will undertake post legislative scrutiny to build on initial post legislative scrutiny undertaken by the predecessor Enterprise and Business Committee (Active Travel: the start of the journey (February 2016).

Engagement Activity

Throughout February the committee commissioned focus groups to discuss perceived barriers to active travel, current good practice and areas for improvement - a note from these visits is available here

In December the Committee launched a survey to help it understand how and why people cycle or walk, and why they don’t. Over 2,500 responses were received - a report on these surveys is available here

A short video is also available that summarises the results of the survey and some of the key themes arising.
