EVENT: Migration through the lens of Girmit
Date: Thursday 9 May 2024
Time: 10.00 - 15.00
Location: Neuadd, Senedd
Description: Migration thorugh the ages has shaped not just Britain, but also the world. The british Empire being the largest and lost widely spread contributed to outward migration resulting in a number of new countries coming up. Girmit (Agreement) was one British scheme which took over 2 million indentured laborers from India to various parts of the Empire and also to the sugar plantations across the world. We would be remembering and celebrating the culture of the Girmit people and their contributions to Wales. A sub section will also deal with the Romany Gypsy people who migrated from India and are currently very marginalised. We would aim to give a voice to this section to be heard.
Open to the public: Attendance at the event is by invitation only however the Senedd and the Pierhead will remain accessible to the public during our normal opening hours.
