EVENT: The Power of a HUG: the future of assistive technology in care

Date: Thursday 7 December 2023

Time: 10.00 - 15.00

Location: Neuadd, Senedd

Description: The HUG design for dementia product is a soft, weighted product with a beating heart and music, designed to be cuddled to offer comfort and connection for people living with advanced dementia. It has been developed through university research, involving NHS, care homes, designers, technologists, charities, people living with dementia and their families. The HUG has been evaluated and the results evidence the benefit of HUG as a therapeutic comforter, proven to reduce anxiety and agitation. HUG is a Welsh innovation success story! It was designed, developed and evaluated in Wales. It has since launched as a spinout in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Society, and HUGs are now sold all over the world. Over the last year, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have been trialling HUGs across their care settings with positive results and will showcase these examples of best practice during the event. The event brings together key stakeholders from health boards, social care services, charities and carers to hear about the power of a HUG and explore the future of assistive technology in care.

Open to the public: Attendance at the event is by invitation only however the Senedd and the Pierhead will remain accessible to the public during our normal opening hours.
