EVENT: National Police Memorial Day

Date: Tuesday 27 September 2022

Time: 10.00 - 15.00

Location: Oriel, Senedd

Description: National Police Memorial Day was founded by Joe Holness following the brutal killing of fellow Kent Police officer Jon Odell in December 2000. This official annual event provides a dignified and sensitive service of remembrance to honour the courage and ultimate sacrifice of police officers throughout the United Kingdom. The service, which rotates around each of the four countries, is held on the nearest Sunday to 29 September. This coincides with Saint Michael’s Day as St Michael is the patron saint of police officers. This year the service will be held on Sunday 25 September 2022 in the International Convention Centre, Belfast. In 2023 Cardiff will host the event at St David’s Hall. National Police Memorial Day is supported by royalty, the Government and UK police services. The magnitude of the day is indicated by its patron - His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. To mark the day of remembrance the Welsh Government have agreed to illuminate Cathays Park 1 Building blue, as have the 4 Welsh Chief Constables who are lighting the 4 Welsh Police Headquarter buildings blue. This event is to highlight the work of the NPMD and Roll of Honour Trust and to mark 12 months of remembrance prior to the service in Cardiff in 2022.

Open to the public: Attendance at the event is by invitation only however the Senedd and the Pierhead will remain accessible to the public during our normal opening hours.
