EVENT: Welsh Government consultation on Petroleum Extraction Policy

Date: Thursday 20 September 2018

Time: 12.00 - 14.00

Location: Media Briefing Room, Senedd

Description: In the context of the Welsh Government consultation on Petroleum Extraction Policy the Academy is holding an event in the media briefing room on September 20. Our colleague Prof Andrew Barron of the Energy Safety Research Institute in the College of Engineering will present the case for a less prescriptive approach to extraction than the consultation document advocates. He has done extensive research into methods of shale gas extraction that do not involve the use of water and has new evidence with regard to the potential of combining elements of shale gas extraction with carbon sequestration. Prof Barron has presented at the National Assembly before, but the research has moved on since then, particularly with regard to the carbon sequestration potential. This is obviously a highly controversial topic, and it is clearly important in a wide range of evidence is heard and the event is to ensure that research can be presented to inform the debate.

Open to the public: Attendance at the event is by invitation only however the Senedd and the Pierhead will remain accessible to the public during our normal opening hours.
