EVENT: Advertising Standards Authority exhibition - drop-in to deal with any questions about ads or how we regulate ads in Wales

Description: The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK’s independent advertising regulator and we are having an exhibition stand to provide an opportunity for AMs and staff to come and talk to us about any questions they have about our regulation or concerns about ads that they've seen. We have been administering the non-broadcast Advertising Code for 56 years and the broadcast Advertising Code for 14, with our remit further extended in 2011 to include companies’ advertising claims on their own websites and in social media spaces under their control. Our legal backstops are Ofcom on broadcast ads and Trading Standards on non-broadcast ads. We are responsible for ensuring that advertising is legal, decent, honest and truthful and our work includes undertaking proactive projects and acting on complaints to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive ads. Last year we dealt with over 27,000 complaints with over 7000 ads amended or withdrawn. We are committed to evidence-based regulation and we continually review new evidence to ensure the rules remain fit-for-purpose. Areas we regulate include: food and soft drinks high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS), gambling, alcohol, tobacco, broadband, parcel deliveries, and we are consulting on creating a new Rule on gender stereotypes in ads. In addition to investigating ads and having the power to ban ads, we also provide a wealth of training and advice services (most of which are free) for advertisers, agencies and media to help them understand their responsibilities under the Codes and to ensure that fewer problem ads appear in the first place. We provided over 389,000 pieces of advice and training in 2017.
