EVENT: Trans Representation and Gender Expression in Rock Music: by Kate Hutchinson

Date: Tuesday 4 July 2017

Time: 17.00 - 18.30

Location: Tŷ Hywel, National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Bay, CF99 1NA

Description: This presentation will give a brief run through the history of trans representation in rock, and address how it has helped in changing attitudes and raising awareness. Through an examination of trans pioneers like Jayne County and Laura Jane Grace, and lyrics from Lou Reed and The Kinks, and the blurring of gender stereotypes in image and dress with figures such as David Bowie and the New York Dolls Kate Hutchinson will explore how rock music has often given a voice to minority groups, including the trans and gender variant community. Kate Hutchinson is a woman with a passion for equality for the LGBT+ community. Over the last 4 years she has been involved with many organisations such as ‘Wipe Out Transphobia’, ‘All About Trans’ and the ‘Transgender Equality Legal Initiative’. She quite proudly describes herself as a trans activist with a big mouth. When not trying to save the world, she enjoys playing bass guitar in a couple of bands playing rock through to jazz. For employment she works for ‘Diversity Role Models’. A charity who aim to prevent homophobic, Biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools.

Open to the public: Attendance at the event will be by prior arrangement only. This event is now fully booked. Please do not turn up unless you have booked a place as space is limited. Thank you
