Consideration of the Committee's forward work programme

Minutes:

4.1 The Committee considered its forward work programme. Members agreed the following:

- to write to the relevant Minister and Deputy Ministers’ for updates on the Whole School Approach to Mental health and follow-up on peer on peer sexual harassment.

- subject to the information in the forthcoming correspondence from the Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, respond seeking an update on mother and baby unit provision in Wales.

- to write to the Welsh Local Government Association on the use of vaping in children and young people.

- to scope out work on an inquiry looking at the criminalisation of children and young people

Consideration of the approach to the Committee's strategic planning session

Minutes:

5.1 The Committee agreed it approach to its next strategic planning session which will take place on 14 September.

Implementation of education reforms - consideration of the outcome of the summer 2023 check-in

Minutes:

6.1 The Committee discussed the latest check-in which took place in April/May.

6.2 Members agreed the draft letter to the Minister for Education and Welsh Language.

Update on Committee activities

Minutes:

7.1  Members provided oral updates on Committee activities that they had undertaken during the term.

7.2 The Chair updated Members on the following meetings that had taken place:

 

- Bi-monthly ministerial meetings

- CLASS Cymru event

- Diocesan Director of education, Brecon and Swansea

- Civil Engineering Contractors Association

- Deputy Minister on Healthy Food Environment Legislation

- EYST Team

- Obesity Alliance Cymru

- Chair’s Forum

 

7.3 Members updated the Committee on recent school visits that had taken place for the inquiry into whether disabled children and young people have equal access to education.

8.1 The Committee scrutinised the Minister for Education and Welsh Language and the Minister for Economy.

8.2 The Minister for Education and Welsh Language agreed to share with Committee statistics on the level of contact between Careers Wales and young people with additional learning needs.

8.3 The Minister for Economy agreed to provide Committee with a note on the expansion of degree apprenticeships.
