Point of Order Further to the point of order raised by the Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews, in relation to remarks made by the Member for North Wales, Antoinette Sandbach, on 22 June, the Presiding Officer having reflected further, reinforced the ruling that each individual Member is responsible for the content and accuracy of their contributions. Should those contributions be shown to be inaccurate, the Presiding Officer expects Members to withdraw their remarks immediately and to apologise. When calling a Member to respond to a Point of Order, although they may wish to clarify their remarks, it is not an opportunity to prolong the exchange by engaging in further debate. If there is any doubt as to what has been said, Members should refrain from making any further points and take the opportunity to review the Record of what is said once it is published. The Presiding Officer also reminded Members of the principle that Members should treat each other with respect and courtesy and comply with the directions given from the Chair. While debate in the Assembly should be robust, the Presiding Officer ruled that minor issues of language, or points of little relevance to the debate in question or to the public, should not routinely be the subject of Points of Order. |
