Individual Member Debate: Selection of Motion for Debate

Minutes:

The Business Committee considered the no named day motions tabled by individual members and selected the following motion for debate on Wednesday 25 January:

To propose that the National Assembly for Wales:

 

1. Notes:

 

a) the proliferation of pay day loan companies operating in Wales;

 

b) the extremely high rates of interest many such companies charge their customers;

 

c) the increasing ease of access to such loans through smartphones and the internet; and

 

d) the potential for such lending to create severe debt amongst our poorest communities and to suck money out of them.

 

2. Calls on the Welsh Government, local authorities and the third sector to work together as much as possible to offer viable alternatives to such companies and to alert citizens to the real cost of the loans offered.

Legislation

4(i)

Timetabling of Committee Business: Letter from the Chair of the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee

Minutes:

The Business Committee considered a letter from the Chair of the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee regarding the allocation and timetabling of legislation.  The Presiding Officer undertook to respond, outlining how Business Committee and the Government would continue to ensure that Committee Chairs are informed of upcoming legislation at an early stage.

5(i)

Business Committee Procedural Work Programme: Proposed Timetable

Minutes:

The Business Committee considered a proposed timetable for the Committee’s procedural work programme over the coming months.  Business Managers agreed that procedural issues will be discussed in private as part of the usual Business Committee meeting on a Tuesday morning. The secretariat would liaise with business managers to identify the most convenient slot for public meetings, probably on Monday afternoons.
