Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Environment
and Rural Affairs and, in the light of the Cabinet Secretary’s reply and that there
was little more that the Committee could do to take the issue forward, agreed
to close the petition.

Minutes:
The
Committee considered correspondence on the petition and agreed to write to the Cabinet
Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs to:

ask
for an update on the joint research project with the Marine Conservation
Society and Swansea University to look into this and other matters commissioned
by the then Minister for Natural Resources;
·
emphasise
the importance of collecting the relevant data to provide the necessary evidence
to properly address the problem.

The
Committee considered correspondence on the petition and agreed to:
- Await the views of the petitioner;
- Write to the Minister for Natural
Resources asking him to update the Committee on the work that he
commissioned from Keep Wales Tidy (KWT) on polystyrene litter and its
effect on the environment and on all types of coastal littering in Wales,
to identify priority areas for improvement; and
- Share the information received from
Oxford City Council with both the lead petitioner, Rob Curtis and Gill
Bell, Wales Programme Manager, Marine Conservation Society.

Minutes:
The
Committee discussed the evidence session and agreed to:
- take oral evidence from the Minister for
Natural Resources;
- request a research briefing on the
potential costs for business if they were to switch from using polystyrene
packaging to more environmentally friendly options;
- write to Oxford County Council seeking
their views on the petition; and
- draw the petition to the attention of
the Environment and Sustainability Committee.

Rob Curtis agreed to forward the Committee information regarding the ban of polystyrene food packaging in mainland European Cities.
