The Co-Chair explained that Professor Rowena Hill and Richard Pickford from Nottingham Trent University had been commissioned to produce a gap analysis of the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry’s Module 1 report. Dr Simon Williams, has also been appointed as a long-term expert adviser to the Committee. The academics were attending today’s meeting to provide an update on civil contingencies as well as an opportunity for Members to ask questions and shape the direction of their work in preparing the gap analysis which will assist the Committee in its evidence gathering to identify potential gaps that require further consideration.

 

As this session related to internal committee business the Co-Chair proposed that the item was held in private session.

3 Discussion and Next Steps

The Committee considered a briefing outlining options around expert advisors and academics to support the work of the Committee.

 

Members discussed options of next steps it could take prior to the UK Covid Inquiry publishing its report on its Module 1 in early summer 2024.

 

The Committee agreed to next meet in early 2024 with academics and experts to take advise on relevant issues arising from the UK Covid Inquiry modules.

 

The Committee will also receive a briefing on the civil contingencies framework in Wales to assist our understanding of this area. These meetings will be conducted in public. Members also agreed to publish a statement of intent in the interim, in order to outline the Committee’s planned work.

Discussion and Next Steps

Minutes:

The Members discussed options of next steps it could take, agreeing to continue to monitor the work of the UK Covid Public Inquiry in the interim and seek to engage with expert advisors to support the Committee in its work. The Committee also discussed its approach to wider engagement for the duration of its work and will communicate these plans publicly once an approach has been agreed and finalised.
