Nomination of the First Minister under Standing Order 8

Minutes:

The item started at 11.00

The Presiding Officer invited nominations for the appointment of First Minister, in accordance with Standing Order 8.2.

Vaughan Gething nominated Eluned Morgan.

Delyth Jewell nominated Rhun ap Iorwerth.

Samuel Kurtz nominated Andrew RT Davies.

As there were three nominations, a vote was conducted by roll call. The Presiding Officer invited each Member present to vote for a candidate. Members were called in alphabetical order. In accordance with Standing Order 8.2, neither the Presiding Officer nor the Deputy Presiding Officer were permitted to vote.

The results of the roll call were as follows:

As Eluned Morgan received more votes than the total number of votes cast for all other candidates the Presiding Officer declared that she is nominated for appointment as First Minister of Wales, and that in accordance with Section 47(4) of the Government of Wales Act, a recommendation would be made to His Majesty that Eluned Morgan is appointed as First Minister.

The Presiding Officer invited Eluned Morgan and party leaders to address the Senedd.

 


Meeting: 12/05/2021 - Plenary - Sixth Senedd (Item 3)

Nomination of the First Minister under Standing Order 8

Minutes:

The item started at 16.47.

The Senedd resolved to take nominations for the appointment of First Minister, in accordance with Standing Order 12.11.

The Presiding Officer invited nominations for the appointment of First Minister, in accordance with Standing Order 8.2.

Rebecca Evans nominated Mark Drakeford.

There were no other nominations, so in accordance with section 47(4) of the Government of Wales Act the Presiding Officer stated her intention to recommend to Her Majesty the appointment of Mark Drakeford as First Minister.

The Presiding Officer invited Mark Drakeford to address the Senedd, followed by leaders of the opposition parties.
