He is member of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation.

 

The Committee noted that the Welsh Government have provided assurance regarding consulting stakeholders when they progress the review of the Code although they are unable to provide a specific timescale at present due to the impact of the Avian flu, Covid and Brexit. In light of the assurance from the Minister, the Committee agreed to thank the petitioner and close the petition.

The Committee agreed to write back to the Welsh Government one last time to seek specific responses to the concerns and questions raised by the petitioner and highlight the Game Birds (Cage Breeding) Bill which has been introduced in the House of Lords.

The Committee agreed to write to the Minister for Rural Affairs, North Wales and Trefnydd to seek a response to the areas highlighted by the petitioner, asking how they may influence and interact with each other as well as the call from the petitioner, together with a clear timeframe.

The Committee considered correspondence on the petition and agreed to refer the petition to the next Senedd and ask its successor committee to consider the call for the use of game bird cages to be banned and the review of the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Gamebirds in light of the context then.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to write back to the Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs to:

·         share the further comments provided by the petitioners;

·         seek an update on the review of the Code of Practice commenced in 2019 and any further research being considered on this issue; and

·         seek clarification as to why the Minister is not minded to act to move further to prohibit the practice of caging birds for this purpose.
