This petition was considered alongside petition P-05-1015 Categorise schools as critical infrastructure.

 

The Committee considered an update on the petition and agreed in light of the ongoing scrutiny being applied to this subject by the CYPE Committee, the commitment by the Welsh Government to prioritise keeping schools open, and the expectations and guidance produced about provision of online learning, that there was no further action it could take at this time. It agreed to close the petitions and thank the petitioners.

The Committee agreed to write back to the Minister for Education to state that further consideration needs to be given to the availability of childcare for children of key workers during core working hours in any future lockdowns, and share the petitioner’s views about how local authorities should approach future school closures or lockdowns.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to write back to the Minister for Education to share the petitioner’s response to her letter and ask what the Government’s expectations are for summer holiday key worker childcare provision and, following the announcement that schools will be expected to reopen fully for the autumn term, seek further information about the extended hours provision expected to be available for key workers.
