In light of the information provided by Welsh Government regarding various ways of affording protection to ancient trees under current planning or protection orders, and the fact that Cadw has decided that scheduling trees as ancient monuments is not appropriate, the Committee agreed that there is little further the that can be achieved at this stage and to close the petition.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write to Cadw to ask for details about any protections afforded to ancient trees such as yews in Wales, or any schemes which could be used for this purpose.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         seek further information from the petitioner about the specific steps that she would like to see the Welsh Government take to provide additional protection to ancient yew trees; and

·         write back to the Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs to ask her to outline the recommendations previously made by the Task and Finish Group on ancient, veteran and heritage trees and how these have since been taken forward by the Welsh Government.
