The Committee considered correspondence in relation to this issue. Given that the First Minister and Presiding Officer have stated that they do not intend to use ‘Cymru’ instead of ‘Wales’, the Committee agreed to close the petition.

The Committee agreed:

To write to the Petitioner advising that neither the Welsh Government nor the National Assembly have the power to formally change its name.

Seek independent advice on the etymology of the word ‘Wales’.

Pending response from the petitioner, the Committee agreed to write to the First Minister and to the Assembly Commission seeking their views regarding an informal change of name.
