Minutes:
The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write to the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee to ask them to consider the issue of vegan options as part of their review of their report Rethinking Food in Wales: Public Procurement of Food. It agreed to thank the petitioners for raising the issue and close the petition.

Minutes:
The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed
to request a legal brief on the question as to whether primary legislation is
required to achieve the changes sought by the petitioners; and following this,
write again to the Welsh Government to make relevant proposals for how to
address this issue.

The
Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to:

write
back to the Minister for Finance to ask how the current National Procurement
Service food and drink framework agreements enable and promote the provision of
daily vegan options on public sector menus, and
·
write
to the Minister for Education to ask whether the Government has any plans to
review the Healthy eating in maintained schools statutory guidance, in regards
to the requirements to provide menu choices appropriate for those following a
vegan diet.

Minutes:
The
Committee considered further correspondence from the Minister for Environment,
Energy and Rural Affairs, and a joint response from the Ministers for Health
and Social Services and Education and agreed to :
- gather
further information in relation to schools and hospitals from local
authorities and health boards; and
- write
to the Minister for Health and Social Services to:
o
ask for
information over the timescale and process for refreshing the All-Wales
Nutrition and Catering Standard;
o
share the view
of the Committee that large scale public sector catering providers should be
required to provide a vegan and vegetarian option on their menus and other
public sector caterers should be required to provide a reason for opting out;
and
o
ask what
consideration had been given to legislation in this area.

The
Committee considered further correspondence on the petition and agreed to write
to:

the
Minister for Environment to ask her to incorporate this issue into the Welsh
Government’s work following its recent declaration of climate change emergency;
and
·
the
Minister for Education and the Minister for Health and Social Services to thank
them for the information provided, but ask whether this means that they would
expect all daily menus in school and hospital settings to include vegetarian
and vegan food options.

Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to write to the
Minister for Health and Social Services and the Minister for Education to ask what
assessment or research has been carried out in relation to the sufficiency of
menu options currently available in Welsh hospitals and schools for people
following a vegan diet.
