The Committee noted the work done by the Welsh Youth Parliament on life skills in the curriculum (including political education), the imminent full introduction of the new curriculum for Wales, and the inclusion of political education within the Welsh Baccalaureate, and agreed to close the petition and thank the petitioner for her engagement.

The Committee considered the petition alongside P-05-860 Make curriculum for life lessons compulsory and agreed to write back to the Minister for Education to ask:

  • for an interim solution to be put in place, either through the current PSE curriculum or the Welsh Baccalaureate, to support young people who might be voting for the first time in 2021; and
  • for consideration to be given to other ways young people can access information in relation to political education outside the school curriculum, for example through youth work settings.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         write a combined letter in relation to this petition and P-05-860 to the Minister for Education to request that the Minister consider swifter action to ensure that improvements to the political education provided with schools are implemented prior to the proposed extension of voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds for the 2021 Assembly elections.
