The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write to the Minister for Health and Social Services to ask what arrangements he would expect to be in place for patients who need investigation in health boards yet to implement pre-biopsy mpMRI scans as recommended by the revised NICE guidelines.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to:

  • write back to the Minister for Health and Social Services to:

·         ask for an update on the implementation of the new NICE Guideline for prostate cancer;

·         outline the concerns raised by Prostate Cancer UK and the petitioner, and ask for further consideration to be given to how men living in areas of Wales where mpMRI scanning is not yet available can be given access to these scans as an interim measure, for example through other health boards or the private sector; and

·         write to other cancer charities in Wales to seek their views to the issues raised, including the plans for implementation of mpMRI scanning.

The Committee considered further correspondence on the petition and agreed to write to the Minister for Health and Social Services to:

 

·         seek an update on the actions of the Welsh Government and the Wales Urology Board to ensure that the final NICE Guideline on prostate cancer is implemented across Wales; and

·         ask for consideration to be given to the interim solution proposed by the petitioner to enable patients to access private scanning facilities whilst capacity and equipment is built up within the NHS.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         write to the Business Committee to seek time for a plenary debate given that the petition had received over 5,000 signatures; and in the meantime

·         write back to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services to ask:

o   for details of the outcome of the workshop organised by the Wales Urology Board on 12 November;

o   for an assessment of the current availability of mpMRI scans pre-biopsy for patients in Wales;

o   what support the Welsh Government has given to support the adoption and availability of mpMRI scans across Wales;

o   what support the Welsh Government would provide to health boards in the event that NICE revises its guidelines to recommend the use of mpMRI scans pre-biopsy; and

o   whether he considers there is an appropriate interim solution which would enable access to mpMRI scans for patients across Wales, such as through enabling access to private facilities for scans.
