The Committee considered further correspondence from the Minister for Education and the petitioner. The Committee agreed to close the petition following the action taken to remind Headteachers, governing bodies and others of the need to ensure that Design and Technology class risk assessments are up-to-date through the Dysg Newsletter. In doing so, the Committee wished to thank the petitioner for raising this matter.

The Committee considered further correspondence on the petition and agreed to write back to the Minister for Education to question how effective the article within the Dysg newsletter will be in reminding school leaders to revisit risk assessments relating to Design & Technology classes, and to ask why specific guidance in relation to this subject cannot be produced.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Education and agreed to await a further update from the Cabinet Secretary, and views from the petitioner, before considering whether any further action on the petition is required.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary together with further comments from the petitioner and agreed to write to the Cabinet Secretary for Education to ask:

·         if her commitment to remind Headteachers, and others, of their duties in this area will take the form of an advice note as requested by the petitioner; and

·         for her to provide a copy of this to the Committee once it has been produced.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to write back to the Cabinet Secretary for Education to share the further information provided by the petitioner and ask:

 

    • for her views in light of the fact that a limit appears to be in place in some other parts of the UK;
    • whether the Welsh Government will give consideration to reviewing the suitability of existing guidelines and the extent to which it is followed by schools in Wales; and
    • whether she will consider options other than legislation for realising the aims of the petition.
