In light of recent developments which demonstrate that the proposal to build a new prison in Baglan is not going ahead, the Committee agreed to close the petition and congratulate the petitioners on the success of their campaign.

The Committee agreed to await the petitioners’ response to the Welsh Government’s Written Statement on Justice Policy in Wales, issued on 6 April, before considering further action on the petition.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Public Services and agreed to await the views of the petitioner and, at that point, to consider writing to the Ministry of Justice.

The Committee considered correspondence from the petitioner and agreed to write to the Welsh Government to ask for further information on the decision making process it will undertake in relation to the sale of the land, should the Ministry of Justice obtain planning permission for the construction of a prison.
