5 Evidence Session: P-05-765 Keeping Current Guidelines for Religious Assemblies

The Committee considered the petition alongside P-05-757 Remove the Obligation on Schools to Hold Acts of Religious Worship.
The Committee heard evidence from the Minister for Education and agreed, given the clarity provided by the Minister that the Welsh Government will not be taking forward further work on this issue during the current Assembly, that there is little more that can be achieved at this time. The Committee agreed to close the petition, thanking the petitioners for using the petitions process.

Remove the Obligation on Schools to Hold Acts of Religious Worship and
agreed to write to the Cabinet Secretary for Education to request further
details about the ongoing consideration of issues around Human Rights, the
UNCRC and discrimination, and to ask if she can provide a more precise
timescale for providing a substantive response to the Committee.

The
Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:
- Consider it alongside P-05-757 Remove
the Obligation on Schools to Hold Acts of Religious Worship in future; and
- Return to this petition once they have
received a response from the Cabinet Secretary for Education asking whether
the Welsh Government will consider reviewing the current law and
guidelines surrounding collective worship, and if any consideration has
been given to the compatibility of the current requirements with human
rights law – the action agreed for P-05-757.
