The Committee agreed to close the petition because it is not possible to identify how to take the petition forward in the absence of contact with the petitioner, and in light of the work currently being undertaken by the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee on the same subject as the petition.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs along with further comments from the petitioner and agreed to:

 

  • write to the Cabinet Secretary to ask if they will consider increasing tree canopy coverage in Wales’ towns and cities as a priority for the Area Statement process that will be contributed to by Natural Resources Wales; and
  • draw the petition to the attention of the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee as they are currently undertaking work on the issue.

The Committee considered correspondence on the petition and agreed to:

·         write to the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs to ask what increase in tree cover in urban areas has been achieved in last five years and whether other plant species are also used for a similar purpose; and

·         seek views from the petitioners on the response received.

The Committee considered correspondence from the petitioner and agreed to write to:

·         The Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs to ask if guidance will be produced on the benefits which trees can offer in towns and cities and on improving canopy cover;

·         Natural Resources Wales to ask what support it provides for planting individual street trees in towns and cities.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         await further comments from the petitioner and ask the incoming Committee to consider the petition further when it is available;

·         draw the petitioner’s attention to the final paragraph of the Minister’s response, where he suggests that they might contact local authorities in Wales to develop the benefits of urban and community tree planting and help them put forward funding applications for this purpose, particularly in the context of the implementation of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and the Planning (Wales) Act 2015.
