3.1     The Committee considered the written update from the Welsh Government.

 

3.2     The Committee agreed the following:

·         Invite the Chief Nursing Officer to provide evidence to the Committee at a future meeting.

·         Write to all Community Health Council’s enquiring about what work is being undertaken in relation to notify patient nutrition and hydration.

3.1 Members considered the letter from Professor White and noted that the Auditor General plans to review the recomendations contained in his both his report from 2011 and the Committee’s report of 2012. The Committee agreed to return to this item in the autumn.

2.1 The Committee questioned Professor Jean White, Chief Nursing Officer, Peter Jones, Deputy Director Digital Health and Care and Peter Wiles, Deputy Director Policy and Performance Division on hospital catering and nutrition.

 

2.2 Professor White agreed to send further information on how the e-learning nutrition training programme is funded and the timeline for incluing all training on all electronic staff records.

 

2.3 Professor White agreed to write to the Committee in April with an evaluation of the pilot project being undertaken on food waste at Llandough Hospital in March and provide an update on discussions health boards are having with local authorities on the collection of food waste. She also agreed to provide an update on how pre-registration training is captured.

2.2 The Committee scrutinised the witnesses.

 

Action points:

 

The Welsh Government agreed to provide:

 

·         A Cost Benefit Analysis of each option for the proposed IT structure to underpin hospital catering function;

·         Details on the percentage of Band 5 nursing staff across all Health Boards who cannot access e-learning facilities as a result of not having access to work-email accounts;

·         Costs associated with the implementation of the e-learning package on patient nutrition;

·         Further details of levels of participation in on-line training packages in the NHS;

·         Further information on the destination of food waste, including details of the waste contracts between health boards and local authorities; and

·         A note explaining measures put in place by health boards to meet requirements set out by the Food Hygiene Bill.

 

2.3 The Committee agreed to write to the Minister with concerns raised in this meeting.

  • Further details on how hospitals are complying with the necessary food hygiene standards, including the number of general hospitals which have been marked below a satisfactory hygiene grade over the last five years.
  • An update on the re-inspection and re-rating of hygiene standards at Whitchurch Hospital, highlighting details of any progress.

The Auditor General for Wales agreed to provide:

 

·         A digest of good practice.
