Debate: "Securing Wales' Future": Transition from the European Union to a new relationship with Europe
Decision Maker: Plenary - Fifth Senedd
Status: Complete
Is Key decision?: Yes
Purpose:
NDM6228
Jane Hutt (Vale of Glamorgan)
Rhun ap Iorwerth (Ynys Môn)
To propose the National Assembly for Wales:
- Notes that the UK Government has yet to
set out a detailed plan for how the UK should withdraw from the European
Union and its future relations with the rest of Europe.
- Recognises the result of the referendum
about the UK's membership of the European Union.
- Welcomes the publication of the White
Paper, Securing Wales' Future.
- Endorses the priorities it identifies
and the approach it describes.
- Believes the UK Government should fully
respect Wales' priorities, as set out in the White Paper, in the overall
UK negotiating position and supports continuing efforts by the Welsh
Government through the Joint Ministerial Committee to convince the UK
Government of the merits of this approach.
- Notes the UK Government's intention to
seek to trigger Article 50 by the end of March.
- Reaffirms the critical importance of the
Sewel Convention, and believes that this should require the UK Government
to consult and seek the approval of the devolved administrations on its
negotiating position both before and during negotiations, and on any final
agreements with the European Union.
- Demands that any final deal must be
developed with the best interests of the Welsh economy and society at
heart, and not designed around narrow political interests.
