EVENT: Transforming Relationships and Sexuality Education: From Stats to Stories

Date: Thursday 12 January 2023

Time: 17.30 - 20.00

Location: Pierhead

Description: Wales’ new statutory Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) has learners’ rights, needs and voice at the heart of the curriculum. However, research suggests that there is a widening gap between what children and young people are learning and the RSE they experience in school. Too often, what matters to young people is boxed up in ways that stereotype and simplify their experience. These gaps make it difficult to provide relevant and engaging Relationships and Sexuality Education with and for children and young people. Unboxing RSE is an event designed to bridge these gaps and show how creative methods can enable educators to connect and critically engage with how children and young people are learning about a range of RSE issues, from school to screen. It shares the findings and resources from the Engaging Sexual Stories project – a collaboration between Cardiff University, University College London, The Open University and Brook, funded by the Wellcome Trust. The day is split into two parts. In the afternoon session, invited groups of pupils and practitioners (age 14-18) will be introduced to a range of activities that schools can adapt to enable young people to safely and creatively share what they want to learn about and how within the context of Wales’ new RSE. The evening session will display their findings and share additional resources and professional learning opportunities (with Brook) via a series of short talks, performances, films, and discussions.

Open to the public: The event will take place outside our normal opening hours therefore attendance will be by invitation only
