Description: The Rookery- There is a sliver of land wedged between the River Ebbw and the A467, just north of Risca in south Wales, that once hosted a small mining community at the edge of the Black Vein coal mine. The Rookery was a small settlement of miner's dwellings that endured throughout the colliery's working life and beyond, but slowly became abandoned and derelict in the 1950's. Now there is very little evidence of its existence, just a small, thriving wood that now echoes with the calls from the heronry that overlooks it, a sound that provides a fitting testimony to the dynamic change that this small corner of the south Wales coalfield has experienced.
Open to the public: The event will take place outside our normal opening hours therefore attendance will be by invitation only
