I think there is a concern that 'reasonable punishment' is a justification for parents to smack children, rather than strive to do better.

I am concerned that parents who find themselves struggling to deal with a stressful situation and who fail to adopt a better practice and resort to a moderate smack might be criminalised for this failing. Especially when some people find themselves in the role of parents without planning or preparation.
I would not wish to see parents separated from their children on the grounds of a single ill judged punishment or to treat a mild smack in the same category as violent abuse.
I would also be concerned at children creating extra stress for parents by believing themselves to be exempt from punishment.

I think the bill should go ahead, but there needs to be clear communication for parents.
