It is no longer acceptable in this day and age that children do not receive the same legal protection from assault as adults. Hitting or smacking children is inappropriate in any context as it gives in to adult anger and associates pain and hurt with learning. Parents, adults and carers should not resort to behaviour that does not respect the rights of children to live free from fear.

To ensure good implementation we need comprehensive parenting education and support. Helping parents and carers learn strategies and methods to parent with empathy is vital. See what the Inuit do in Alaska, the achievements of the Leeds scheme re obesity.
Care needs to be undertaken in censoring parents who may have never been parented properly themselves.
