corporal punishment is fundamentally ineffective, often counter-productive and potentially both psychologically and physically damaging (for both parties). Simply put, it does far more harm than good

The protection of children must be paramount and whilst I would prefer that legal imperatives were not needed, I do understand that a legal ban is needed to ensure child safety and provide behaviour guidance to parents.
