The proposals do not acknowledge the facts that a child is not born to good behaviour but must be
gui ded/disciplined to responsible adulthood. To ignore a loving upbringing from any other does not lead to physical abuse, which is adequately covered by existing law. Children need to appreciate what is good not only for their lives but that of their family and society: warnings and discipline as currently allowable is a kindness to the child. The proposals to ban smacking are only in the line of the current philosophy of destroying families and promoting a strong individualism.

The wishes of the people in a survey of 2017 where around 11% supported banning.

The family of which I am a senior member is serving society by the adoption of three young children on the understanding already no smacking is allowed. Despite best efforts and involvement of professionals It doesn't work to treat them like adults. To treat all adults the same as parents is impractical and is a recipe to fill the gaols with people that society needs.
