Until I heard about the bill, it hadn't really occurred to me that it is socially acceptable to physically punish a child when you cannot hit an adult. This is completely wrong.
The idea that a parent/carer can abuse a child to any extent and when challenged in court can claim that it was 'reasonable punishment' is just abhorrent.
Over 50 countries around the world have brought in this legislation and it has not made parents into criminals. The people claiming this misunderstand the intention of this bill.
The bill will provide clear guidance for health care professionals, social workers, health visitors on the advice to give to new parents/struggling parents.
