I think it is unnecessary. I do not think there is sufficient evidence that smacking within a loving family is harmful . I worked as a social worker and manager for over 35 years, primarily within Childrens' Services and Child Protection, and I investigated many situations where the current law considers punishment to be excessive. I believe the existing law is quite sufficient for these situations. Introducing legislation which would require investigation of any smack by Social Services and Police would place considerable strain on these Services and divert resources from more serious situations. It would also be very alarming for the parents and children concerned and I would imagine prove counter-productive.
