I believe that physical punishment of children is the abuse of the most vulnerable people, who need protecting and nurturing not hurting. There is no evidence to support that smacking is effective and is more likely to cause long term emotional harm.
Other strategies of discipline, based on positive rewards rather than punishment are more effective.

Absolutely. Legislation is definitely needed just as it is with adults. Children need more not less protection thank adults.

This legislation is overdue. It is barbaric that children are treated as lesser human beings. They have rights and deserve to have protection.
