Dear Chair,

RE: Residential Care for older people

Thank you for the opportunity to provide the Committee with a detailed update on work underway to take forward the Requirements for Action made in my Care Home Review, many of which echoed those made by the Committee in its own Review.

Following your request for a timeline to detail the work underway, I will be happy to provide this in March.  As I stated in my evidence session, this piece of work is currently being undertaken, the aim of which is to consolidate the changes that are taking place across Health and Social Care to implement the Requirements for Action made in my Review.  I hope it will prove useful in providing an overall structure to the action being taken, making progress easier to track by the Committee and myself.

Additionally, I have written to the Minister for Health & Social Services to request a meeting with the lead official on the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016 to ensure that the relevant Requirements for Action made in my Care Home Review are reflected within the Act’s underpinning regulations.  This work will also be reflected within the timeline.

I look forward to providing an analysis of my scrutiny of these regulations to the next Health and Social Care Committee, in addition to holding further conversations about how our respective scrutiny roles can be aligned within our future work programmes.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Rochira

Older People’s Commissioner for Wales
